Sally and I met to catch up at an outdoor café in Lexington. As we were sipping on iced tea she shared with me this huge skeleton in her closet that put a lump in my throat the size of Jumbo the elephant. I watched the tears roll down her face. Her eyes were racked with such pain and turmoil. And in her voice I heard the hatred that she was feeling for herself. It broke my heart. Sally’s story was that of the prodigal child. She had already come back to the fold after her fall. She was a believer and lived her life seeking God and His ways as best she could. But this dark secret that she shared with me had never before seen the light of day.
We sat in silence for a moment…and then she asked me what you should do. How she could get rid of the shame. I took a deep breath. The air felt a bit still and my heart was racing because I could so relate to what she was saying in many ways and because I also knew what was in store for her: joy, freedom, peace, a brand new direction.
