There are mornings when my prayer is so simple. God, please help me today. I need you.
And then I’m off and running. And this is fine - we don’t want to be legalistic or burdensome when it comes to the spiritual discipline of prayer.
We want to foster the mindset that prayer is a privilege not a must do. That we GET to pray, not that we have to pray.
WHO should pray?
Anyone and Everyone. God is your Creator. He designed you to seek. He created a hole in your heart and soul that will never, ever be satisfied unless filled with Him and His truth. He built you with a mission, a purpose here on earth. He created you uniquely with gifts and talents to be exercised to help and serve others.
If you don’t know God, if you long to believe but are doubtful that Jesus Christ died on a cross to atone for your sins, guilt and shame, to offer you eternal life and to give you a fresh start, you only need to call out to Him and tell Him. He is available 24/7. He’s listening and waiting for you to pray.
WHAT should we pray? Any thing and everything. There is no topic off limits!
WHEN should we pray? Any time and all the time. David models in Psalm 5 that his prayers went up each morning. But if you’re like I am you’re kinda in constant dialogue with God all day long. Maybe evening time is your favorite time to pray.
WHERE should we pray? Anywhere and everywhere. Some folks enjoy having a prayer room or a prayer closet, that cozy place to commune with the Lord. Truly every place is the best place to pray. We can pray when we’re trapped in bondage and in prison or when we’re walking in the light, yoked to Christ.
HOW should we pray? And this is where it gets interesting. We can order our prayers in 5 Ps. Not only will we refresh our prayer methods and revamp our style, but we can also gain clarity of thought and mind in the process.
