When I walked back into the living room, I was at once overcome by laughter and then by motherly love and adoration. My young Matthew had wrapped himself from toe to head in dazzling strings of Christmas lights. I had asked him to check whether the bulbs were all properly working, and no doubt he couldn't resist the temptation to twirl the brightly shining strings completely around himself. His toothless grin, sparkling eyes, and tousled hair made the star on top. Every time I hear Chris Tomlin sing one stanza from from his popular worship song "How Great Is Our God," I think of Matthew and the sweetness of that single moment. He wraps Himself in light, And darkness tries to hide And trembles at His voice Trembles at His voice I ask myself: As a Christian, am I wrapped completely, enveloped by, and covered in God's light and His presence? Sadly, sometimes I'm not. I give way to my flesh; I allow thoughts to captivate me and call me into submission instead of taking them captive and making them bow to Christ's Truth as I've been taught. I experience moments of fear and doubt and dismay. Fortunately, Jesus offers us remedy out of any darkness. In John 8:12, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." When we accompany Him, His light penetrates, making the way for Life to confront our death. In exposure to Christ, darkness flees. Our job, then, must be simple (though not always easy, especially during the busy and emotionally charged holiday season): We need to make time to fully expose our hearts and minds to God. When plugged into the proper source, lights don't strive, fret, worry, tire, complain, or relent...they simply shine. Just as my Matthew wrapped himself in strings of glowing Christmas tree lights, so "the Lord wraps Himself in light as with a garment" (Psa. 104:2). Only under His light and in His presence, will we surely find shelter, rest, and peace.
