Well, that would be Cory Cooley! These are the many hats that he has worn in his life to date! What strikes me about all of these professions and endeavors is that serving others and helping people is the central objective. Cory doesn’t cower back from his creative pursuits and natural gifting. He has what it takes to get things done – I learned so much from him during our interview, and I think you can too. Not only must we deal with the economic crisis which directly affects so many of us personally, but we must also confront the emotional fall out this pandemic has caused.
We’ve all felt sad, depressed, distressed, and anxious. In a nutshell we are grieving. The type of grief we are experiencing may have little to do with loss of life. How do we handle this type of grief? Mary Anna Rogers is the only certified grief recovery specialist in Kentucky who organizes group sessions twice a year using the Grief Recovery Method. These face-to-face classes help participants process their grief in healthy ways. I had the privilege to chat with her recently on the Choose 2 Think Podcast about how to deal with grief and guilt that many of us are undergoing as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. She and I go back a couple of decades when our paths crossed as home educators. She taught drama to scores of homeschooled children and directed quite a few plays with our homeschooling co-ops. She’s fondly known as Miss Mimi. Mary Anna’s family owns Rogers Funeral Home in Frankfort, Ky. The funeral home is listed as the second oldest private business in Ky, and the oldest business that has remained owned and operated by the same family. Now in their 7th generation, they continue to serve families with "dignity, compassion, and respect." It was nearly eight years ago that Mary Anna’s husband John passed away, which no doubt only kindled her desire to share what she learned about grief with others who are hurting and also motivated her to pursue specialist certification with the Grief Recovery Institute. And it certainly helps the medicine go down! The Choose 2 Think podcast interview with Dr. Ken Glass was conducted live in the store during business hours, so occasionally you may hear Ken greet a customer or two. You might just hear the phone ringing, someone being served at the soda fountain up front or the faint whistle of the train as it chugs down Main Street. I loved everything about this interview. It’s been both the hardest and easiest to conduct! Easy, well, because it’s Ken. Hard because he shared so much awesomeness I had no idea what to cut. When you walk into RR Drug, it’s like walking into your grandma’s house. There are racks of candy, a fridge full of cold drinks, and ice cream! The atmosphere drips with nostalgia and warm vibes from the black and white checkered floor and red topped stools at the counter to the ancient and might I say giant apothecary records book on display in the back. Ken and his wife Amanda have created an ambiance that both welcomes and serves. It’s a delicious mix of past and present. You may just walk out the door thinking you are the most important person in the world by the way you are treated. It is truly health CARE at its finest.
