Release It, Don’t Rehearse It: A Conversation with Jennifer Renee Watson

12/5/2025

In a world where we feel pressured to appear polished, productive, and perpetually “put together,” Jennifer Renee Watson brings a breath of fresh honesty. Author of You’re Doing Better Than You Think, speaker, and advocate for emotional and spiritual healing, Jennifer offers a message every woman needs to hear:

You have permission to be both a mess and a masterpiece.

In this deeply encouraging conversation on the Choose 2 Think Podcast, Jennifer opens up about the realities of mental health, the lingering sting of shame, and the courageous journey of healing—one step, one breath, one surrendered moment at a time.

LISTEN NOW

The Weight of Shame—and the Choice to Release It

Shame is one of the heaviest emotions we carry. Even when we understand the difference between guilt (what we’ve done) and shame (who we think we are), it still creeps in and whispers lies.

Jennifer shared one of the most powerful mindsets she learned in her own healing journey:
“I can either release it or rehearse it.”

When we rehearse shame, we replay every moment we fell short:
  • I should have done better.
  • Why did I say that?
  • I’m not enough.

This rehearsing—this mental rerun of our failures—keeps us stuck in a shame spiral. But releasing shame means surrendering what we were never meant to carry. It means offering our broken places to God, trusting that He redeems, restores, and rescues.

Shame loses its power the moment it is spoken, surrendered, and replaced with truth.

The Permission to Be Real

Jennifer is refreshingly honest about her own battles with depression, anxiety, and exhaustion. She reminds us that healing doesn’t always look heroic.

Sometimes the bravest thing you do all day is getting out of bed.

Sometimes courage looks like reaching out for help.

Sometimes healing begins with simply telling the truth about where you are.

And sometimes strength is found not in striving, but in receiving love, support, and grace.

The Power of Community and Connection

Jennifer emphasizes that we were never meant to heal in isolation.

Community is a lifeline.

The right people speak truth when you can’t speak it to yourself. They help carry the burden when your arms grow tired. They remind you of who you are when shame tries to convince you otherwise.

Healing happens in honest, safe relationships—with God and with others.

Small, Gentle Steps Toward Emotional Wellness

One of Jennifer’s most practical gifts is reminding us that wellness doesn’t require dramatic upheaval. It begins with small, faithful steps:
  • Daily affirmations that anchor your identity in truth
  • Gratitude that shifts your posture and perspective
  • Self-care that prioritizes your body, mind, and soul
  • Mindful grounding that brings you back into the present moment
  • Letting go of toxic relationships that drain your emotional and spiritual health
These practices may seem simple, but they build a foundation of resilience—one that can support real, lasting transformation.

You’re Doing Better Than You Think

If there’s one message Jennifer wants women to internalize, it’s this:

You’re farther along than you realize. You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for. You’re no less loved on your hardest days than you are on your best.

Healing isn’t linear. Worth isn’t earned. And God isn’t waiting for you to “get it together.”

He meets you in the mess.

He walks with you in the chaos.

And He lovingly shapes the masterpiece He always knew you were.

Final Thoughts

Jennifer Renee Watson is a voice of hope for women who feel overwhelmed, exhausted, ashamed, or simply unsure of how to move forward. Her message is tender, empowering, and deeply rooted in faith:
Healing is a journey. Transformation is possible. And you don’t have to walk it alone.
