If you’ve ever found yourself dreading the holidays more than anticipating them — the pressure to be merry, the swirl of emotions, the quiet ache under the sparkle — you are so not alone. I recently sat down with the inspiring Heather O’Brien, author of No Fear Allowed: How to Get Free of Fear and Stay That Way, for a two-part series on the Choose 2 Think Podcast, and friend… it was pure gold. We talked about freedom. About fear. About how our minds and our faith work hand-in-hand. And about how you can face the holiday season with peace, joy, and even lightness — no matter what you’ve been carrying. Meet Heather O’Brien
The Brain-Faith ConnectionScience tells us that our repeated thoughts create neural pathways, like grooves in a record. The more you think a certain way — “I can’t handle this,” “I’m so behind,” “Nothing ever changes” — the deeper those grooves run. But here’s the hope: your brain can change. Through neuroplasticity (God’s brilliant design!), new thoughts literally rewire your mind. That’s why Scripture urges you to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Heather’s work lines up perfectly with my 7 R’s for Living Your Best Thought Life — Recognize, Resist, Replace, Repeat, Renew, Rely, Rest — because freedom starts in your thought life. Faith and neuroscience aren’t opposites — they’re allies. 🎧 Part 1: Building the Foundation — Freedom Begins in Your ThoughtsIn the first part of our conversation, I took the mic and ran through my signature method for mind renewal, and Heather backed it up with her 4-prong approach to staying free! As we talked, Heather reminded us that freedom isn’t a one-time event — it’s a lifestyle. You stay free by reading Scripture, worshipping through song, intentionally praying, and staying connected in a community--this is a recipe for lasting emotional and spiritual health and wholeness. 🎧 Part 2: Facing the Holidays with Strength and JoyIn Part 2, we got practical. We looked at the top three toxic holiday thought traps that Christian women often face — and how to shift them. Here are a few for you to roll over as well. Can you feel the energy in the life-giving, God-honoring replacement thoughts? 💭 “Everyone else has it together but me.” 🌱 No one has it all together. God meets me right where I am — messy tree, unbaked cookies, and all. 💭 “If I don’t make it perfect, I’ve failed.” 🌱 Perfection isn’t the goal. Presence is. I can rest in love, not performance. 💭 “I’m so lonely this year.” 🌱 God is near to the brokenhearted. I can invite Him into my loneliness and find connection in new ways. 💭 “The holidays always bring pain.” 🌱 This year can be different. Healing is happening one thought, one moment, one step at a time. 💭 “I’m tired of pretending to be happy.” 🌱 Authenticity is holy. I can be real and still radiant. 💭 “I’ll never feel true joy again.” 🌱 Joy isn’t a feeling I have to find — it’s a fruit I can grow by renewing my mind daily. My TakeawayAfter our conversation, I couldn’t stop thinking about this truth: You don’t have to “feel” the Christmas spirit to experience it. Sometimes freedom looks like sitting quietly, recognizing a painful thought, resisting the lie, and choosing peace anyway. And each time you do, you strengthen new neural pathways toward joy, hope, and connection. Ready to Renew Your Mind This Season?
