Recently as Rico the MorKY and I were taking our daily stroll around Midway, we reached the top of the pebbled path winding around Walter Bradley Park near the back of the elementary school. Our ears perked up, catching laughter bouncing around in the air off to our left.
...melodies so sweet, spontaneous, natural, and overflowing with sheer delight that steadily rose to meet the stunningly blue, cloudless sky.... Upon seeing three young children rolling, tumbling, giggling their way down the side of a slight hill, my mind flashed back to my own children delighting in such an adventure. Then I thought of myself. Why, I could also remember rolling down hills! "Go!" my sister squealed, and together we spiraled, bumping, thumping, and trying to hold the proper form to master the fastest roll. Can you guess that poet and song writer who demonstrated this unique expressive technique in his writing time and time again where he switched his complaint to praise? He begins his outpouring with complaint, a recounting of injustices, and a complete exposure of his feelings and emotions.
But then he switches gears, engaging instead the mindset of praise. Did you say David of the Bible? You're right! You've probably heard of the attitude of gratitude, where we look for that silver lining in even the most grim of situations.
You get the picture. Fostering this attitude allows us to quickly give count of the reality of a situation and shortly after to notice and give brain waves over to the otherwise fortunate side of the situation. We train our brains to process hardship against the backdrop of gratitude and giving thanks. But the mindset of praise goes a step further. It's the constant mental pursuit to recall and recount God's qualities and characteristics despite persecution, hardship, and trial. We can demonstrate an attitude of praise by habit. And developing this habit is fairly easy. Believe it or not, your brain needs de-cluttering as much as your house may need it!
Our brains are incredibly remarkable, 3-pound organs that basically handle all our bodies' functional needs while processing roughly 60K thoughts every day. Mental fatigue and lack of concentration or clarity are real conditions even for the sharpest among us! Given that you do not have underlying medical conditions that are contributing to cognitive dysfunction or severe brain fog (seek medical attention if any doubt), there are a few practical items you can do to find relief.
